Food should be the first medicine, if we address our diet and attitude to eating, we could relieve a multitude of ills. Eating a healthy and balanced diet, under healthy and balanced conditions is one of the best ways of maintaining our health. Eating natural foods, whole foods, organic where possible, adjusting diet to seasonally available and local produce and avoiding over processed foods are just some ways to increase your health with food. Food can also be used to treat specific complaints, there are several traditions of healing with food, including traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda.
A simple plan for improving your health through your diet might be: Ø Eat fresh, local and organic foods. Ø Moderate your intake of animal products and saturated fats. Ø Take time out to enjoy your food Ø Eat slowly and chew well Ø Make cooking an enjoyable and sociable occasion Ø Eat less at each meal Ø Take a 5—10 minute walk after each meal Ø And above all, don’t worry about what you eat, a little of anything is ok, it is excesses that are a problem! |
