Hopi Ear Candles are hollow tubes made from organically grown flax, extracts of honey, beeswax and herbs. The candles provide a non-invasive treatment of the ears and are used to treat a variety of conditions in a practice often known as Thermo-Auricular Therapy. Ear candles are used widely throughout Europe, America and Asia by Doctors and hospitals to treat a variety of ear, nose and throat conditions. As the Hopi ear candle treatment is a non-invasive, relaxing and soothing experience, the popularity of ear-candling continues to increase. It is well worth remembering that you should never put anything smaller than your elbow into your ear and more often than not when using cotton buds or similar to clean your ears you are probably pushing wax and dirt further into the ear and compacting it. This as well as the other damage it is possible to do.

How Hopi Ear Candles work

A Thermo-Auricular treatment takes about an hour and is very relaxing, the patient simply lays comfortably  whilst the Hopi ear candle is carefully inserted into their ear. When lit, the ear candles have a slight sucking action often referred to as the chimney principle, drawing any impurities to the surface where they can be gently removed. The rising air inside the ear sets up a gentle vibration which gently massages the tympanic membrane or eardrum. This helps to regulate the pressures involved inside the ear. Whilst burning, the flow of air within the ear candle circulates a

concentrated vapour containing the essences and oils of the herbs, honey and beeswax. This is soothing and calming and protects the sensitive membranes in the ear. Most impurities or deposits are carried away through the candle "chimney", although some of them can be found in the lower section of the candle after removal from the ear, or some wax could even work its way up to the surface 24-48 hours after. The outer ear is left with a fine coating of this concentrate which should be left to clear naturally.

What Happens during the treatment

You will be asked to lie comfortably on your side and relax. The practitioner will then look inside your ear with an

otoscope to check for wax build up or any obvious ear damage. The ear candle is then lit and gently placed into the auditory canal, where it is held in a vertical position. The practitioner will support the candle and keep it steady. You will experience a pleasant crackling sound and a warm comfortable feeling as the candle burns. The candle is allowed to burn down two thirds of it’s length and then it is removed while you lie there for a few moments. The process is then repeated on the other ear.

The treatment will end with a shiatsu treatment to the head and face or facial massage to help lymph and blood

circulation, help clear the sinuses and help the natural drainage of the ear.
